Well, that's it for the seventh issue of Pure Excitement Comics! All of the back issues are still available online -- but at several diverse locations. Head back to the main page for links to all of the other issues!
My plea for letters last issue seems to have worked, so I'll just dig into the stack...
Hi there!
What?!? No letters from #5?
It's an outrage! Hopefully, this missive will
help make up for it. I've just finished reading through all six issues of PE,
and I'm glad I found you! Being able to read these classic (and
not-so-classic) stories brings a smile to my face. I particularly enjoyed
American Eagle and Eglet.
Maybe you can consider some
theme issues in the future? For example, perhaps
for June or July you can have an all-patriots issue... and an issue devoted to
the fairer sex would be welcomed, as well.... heck, why not have April's issue
be filled with three of the goofiest stories you can find (although what could
be goofier than the Music Master is beyond me!)?
Looking forward to the next issue with bated breath...
Jon B. Knutson
First off, Jon, let me apologize for not replying
personally to this e-mail when I first received it. My wife recently switched e-mail programs on our home
computer and lost a day's worth of mail! She was only recently able to resurrect the text of your letter, but not your
e-mail address! Secondly, thank you for the kind words! It will probably be a while until I put
together another all-female issue of PEC -- it was a struggle to find three usuable and scannable
stories for my first all-female issue! I'll consider the all-patriots issue, but I've used two
of the best candidates (American Eagle and the Liberator) in the last two issues, so that could
also be a problem. Keep reading, I'll see what I can do!
Love your web site!! Love your web site!!
Love your web site!! Longer letter to follow. I'm too busy reading all those kewl comix. Thanks
John Hegenberger
Now this is the type of enthusiasm I enjoy, people!
I really enjoyed your new
issue. The Music Master was pretty much
beyond belief. Mr. E proved that hallucinogenic drugs were indeed
available in the 40s (the internment camp scene was sad, though). It
was interesting how Mr. E yells for the elves to bash the villian's
head on the jagged rocks at the end. My faves remain Man-O-Metal, War
Nurse, and Mr. "Strip for Action" himself, The Target.
John Dalton
(WOW! Three John/Jon's so far...weird!) I'll see what I can
do about return appearances from Man-O-Metal and the Target in the future. My goal, for
the most part, is to feature characters only once in the regular issues of PEC. I may,
however, put together "Specials" or "Annuals" featuring return appearances by some old
favorites. John and I also had a discussion concerning where I locate the material on
my site and I pointed him toward eBay (www.ebay.com). Anyone interested in tracking down
Golden Age comics should check out that site (but try not to outbid me!). John, who has a local
cable access show about comics, also has
a great web site. Check it out!
Bill, Here's your e-mail. I am 56 years old and learned to read on such fare as
you are reprinting. This fills a nostalgic hole in my life; the forties
were fantastic for kids looking for heroes. Stories were usually short and
action packed except for certain characters.
It is a shame you can't do DC books--they had a lot of minor series.
Actually, I would love to see the Lev Gleason family of books returned.
Gleason published Daredevil (the original), Crimebuster in Boy Illustories
and Silver Streak (Daredevil and the Yellow Claw debuted here).
Keep up the good work. Hope to see some of the westerns as well.
Don Bearden
Don, I'll see what I can do about
getting at least one of your requests into an upcoming issue. I do own some issues of Boy Comics,
so Crimebuster may be showing up soon. I agree with you about the DC stuff...I'm sure we'll never
see a Robotman or Star-Spangled Kid Archives, so my site would be a perfect alternative. How about it, DC?
I've also heard from some quarters that I COULD legally feature certain Quality and Fawcett stuff on this site, but
I don't want to push it. I'll stick to the REALLY obscure stuff! Thanks for writing in, Don. I'm glad you
enjoyed the site as much as you did -- that's why it's here!
See ya next month, everybody, when Pure Excitement Comics features three more great heroes from the Golden Age!
In the gallery this month is a copy of Hit Comics no. 27, the earliest book in my
Kid Eternity collection. Along with Kid Eternity, this cover also features an appearance by
Stormy Foster, the Great Defender, one of the first characters featured in my Gallery of
Golden Age Heroes (link to the left).
